Kenya Reimagined: Why This Classic Safari Still Leads the Way

Kenya has long been one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations and my recent journey was a powerful reminder that it continues to evolve, surprise and deliver on every level. From vibrant city experiences in Nairobi to remote wilderness camps and exclusive conservancies, our itinerary showcased exactly why Kenya remains such a strong and sellable product for the trade.

Gamewatchers were waiting for us at the airport on arrival, greeting us warmly and escorting us to a comfortable, immaculately clean vehicle stocked with chilled water in glass bottles — a thoughtful touch after a long journey.

With over 35 years of experience, they clearly know how to craft detailed, personalised itineraries. Communication was prompt and efficient throughout our trip, and they work carefully within all guest budgets without ever compromising on quality. They also offer excellent rates across a wide range of camps, lodges, and hotels in Kenya, as well as Tanzania and Uganda. Importantly, their recommendations are balanced and tailored — not limited to or overly focused on the Porini camps — which gives any guest the confidence that the experience is genuinely designed around them.

Too often treated as a simple transit point, Nairobi deserves far more attention in any well-crafted itinerary. Staying at Nairobi Tented Camp, guests are immediately immersed in a safari style camp with an open fire-pit set in a peaceful, garden setting that feels worlds away from the city—yet everything is within easy reach.

This is a key selling point: guests can enjoy a gentle introduction to Kenya’s outdoors without the need for long transfers or rigid schedules. The ability to walk independently to nearby restaurants, visit local artisan workshops such as Ocean Sole and Matbronze, or explore art galleries and cafés adds real depth to the experience. And of course there is the Daphne Sheldrick elephant orphanage, the giraffe centre and the incredible sightings to be had in Nairobi National Park which is teeming with birdlife, lion, rhino and plenty of plains game. Definitely not to missed!

For those arriving on late flights or with complex connections, recommending two nights in Nairobi is a smart and increasingly popular approach. It allows them to reset, explore, and begin their journey feeling refreshed rather than rushed—particularly important given the timing of many international flight arrivals and departures and the early hour starts on safari.

Flying into Meru offers a sense of exclusivity from the outset. The park is less visited than other regions, yet incredibly rewarding—making it ideal for those seeking a more private and immersive safari.
Rhino River Camp is a standout product here. Its setting—overlooking a flowing river with lush vegetation—creates an immediate sense of calm and connection to nature. The constant sound of water, spacious tented accommodation and attentive service all combine to deliver a high-quality yet simple experience.

Meru itself is a strong selling point. With both black and white rhino, excellent birding (including many species unique to the region), and diverse landscapes ranging from dense bush to open clearings, it offers variety and strong game viewing. Sightings during our visit included multiple rhino, large herds of buffalo, reticulated giraffe and abundant plains game—all within a single afternoon.

For clients who have “been to Kenya before” or want something different from the Mara, Meru is an excellent addition to any itinerary.

One of Kenya’s greatest strengths is the diversity of its camps, and our itinerary highlighted that perfectly.
Properties like Elewana Elsa’s Kopje in Meru offer dramatic positioning with sweeping views and strong storytelling tied to the Born Free legacy—ideal for clients who value history alongside scenery.

Meanwhile, smaller camps such as Rhino River Camp focus on intimacy and tranquillity.
At the higher end, camps such as Mahali Mzuri (in Olare Motorogi Conservancy) deliver a polished, design-led experience with wide appeal for luxury travellers. Recently refurbished, it offers exceptional views, spacious rooms, and a highly curated feel—though it’s worth noting that some clients may prefer a slightly less “instagrammable” approach and more authentic safari atmosphere.

Understanding these nuances is key for the trade. Matching the right client to the right camp—whether they prioritise design, location, wildlife density, or character—will ultimately define their experience.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy continues to be one of Kenya’s most reliable areas for wildlife viewing, particularly for rhino, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. Porini Rhino Camp is a strong and authentic option here, offering a tented experience combined with excellent guiding, access to prolific game and a hide experience right in camp. The new Wilder camp, The River Camp, stands out for its beautiful setting and particularly strong, thoughtful interior design – it feels more refined and contemporary. Porini Rhino Camp benefits from having both a guide and tracker, but The River Camp still offers a wonderfully refined experience in its own right. In addition, accommodation options such as Ol Pejeta Bush Cottages provide a more private, flexible alternative for families or small groups, with dedicated staff and a relaxed, home-style environment.

Accessibility is a major advantage. With improved airstrip options reducing transfer times, it is now easier than ever to include Ol Pejeta in itineraries without compromising comfort.

Game viewing is consistently impressive—black and white rhino, elephant, buffalo, predators and abundant plains game. For clients prioritising wildlife density and variety, this 90,000 conservancy delivers.

The contrast between the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the surrounding conservancies is more relevant than ever—and an important sales point.

Within the conservancies, camps such as Porini Mara Camp, Ol Kinyei Cottages, and Porini Giraffe Camp offer a more exclusive experience. Lower vehicle densities, off-road driving, and a strong connection to community conservation models all contribute to a more intimate safari.

Wildlife remains exceptional. Highlights included large lion populations, resident predators and vast numbers of plains game. The guiding standard—particularly with the use of trackers in the Porini camps—adds significant value and enhances sightings.

Ol Kinyei Conservancy in particular stands out for its sense of space, authenticity, and sheer wildlife richness. For those seeking a quieter, more immersive safari, this is often preferable to the busier areas of the Mara Reserve. The newer Ripoi Conservancy was a delight – just the prettiest conservancy with plains, streams, hills and permanent water during the year. We crossed over and had lunch in Naibosho Conservancy and then continued on to the open plains and richness of Olare Motorogi Conservancy where we visited Mahali Mzuri (mentioned earlier) but sadly could not visit Porini Lion Camp as it had been flooded by the recent unseasonably heavy rains.

That said, a visit into the main Mara Reserve still has its place. The sheer scale and iconic landscapes are unmatched—but expectations should be managed regarding vehicle numbers, even in low season.

Across the board, one of the strongest themes of our fam trip was the quality of hospitality. Camp managers, guides and staff consistently delivered warm, attentive, and personalised service.

Guiding standards were generally excellent, particularly where teams included both a guide and tracker—something that can make a noticeable difference in denser environments.

Food is another standout feature. From relaxed, family-style lunches to well-balanced à la carte dinners, the emphasis is on fresh ingredients, flavour and flexibility is clear. Increasingly, camps are moving towards more adaptable dining styles, allowing guests to eat as much or as little as they wish—an important consideration for modern travellers.

It’s worth noting a few operational details that can help manage client expectations:

• Internal flights can vary in routing, sometimes including additional stops.
• Weather conditions, particularly rain, can impact road transfers and accessibility.
• Nairobi airport processes can be time-consuming, with multiple security checks -clients should allow sufficient time before departure.

Setting these expectations in advance ensures a smoother overall experience.

This fam trip reinforced Kenya’s position as one of the most complete safari destinations in Africa. The combination of accessible logistics, diverse landscapes, exceptional wildlife, and a wide range of accommodation styles makes it incredibly versatile—and highly sellable.

From first-time safari-goers to seasoned Africa travellers, there is something here for everyone.

The key for the trade is to build itineraries that balance variety with flow: combining Nairobi’s cultural edge, Meru’s wild beauty, Ol Pejeta’s wildlife density, and the Mara’s iconic status.

Done well, Kenya doesn’t just meet expectations—it exceeds them and most importantly, it leaves clients wanting to return.
